Poetry and Politics is a collaborative project that is being produced by the New Hampshire Writers' Project in association with the Academy of American Poets and the State of New Hampshire, through the Department of Cultural Resources, with funding support from Jefferson Pilot Financial, Verizon, the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, the New Hampshire Humanities Council and the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts.

As the event organizers, the new Hampshire Writers' Project is proud to host Poetry and Politicsin celebration of our fifteenth anniversary. NHWP serves as a resource for writers, publishers, booksellers, literary agents, educators, librarians, and readers in and near New Hampshire. Our mission is to support the development of individual writers and encourage an audience for literature in New Hampshire.

Publications: We publish an annual catalog of new books by members, a soon-to-be released fact book of resources for New Hampshire writers, a bimonthly newsletter, and an online literary calendar of events, readings, and signings around the state.

Programs: Our workshops are one of the best ways we know to promote the development of individual writers; the Writers’ Day conference celebrates our writing community and offers networking opportunities; the Manuscript Review Service pairs unpublished but promising writers with professional authors who provide constructive criticism and advice about the publishing process; and our special events, like Slam-O-Rama and Poetry and Politics, are an opportunity to bring NH writers and their audience together to have fun and foster support for the literary arts in New Hampshire.

New Hampshire Literary Awards: Every two years, we honor outstanding literary achievements and recognize emerging NH writers. The next awards will be presented in October 2003. (Nomination forms will be available in May).

Public Readings: In special evenings that serve to highlight the work of regional talent and our place in the nation’s literary tradition, New Hampshire's finest writers invite their out-of-state friends to read together. Past events have featured paired readings between Donald Hall and Robert Bly in 1998; Maxine Kumin and Lucille Clifton in 1999; and Cynthia Huntington and Grace Paley in 2002.
