Maggi
Vaugn is the author of nine books of poetry, short stories, and children’s
literature. Her poetry has appeared in numerous magazines, journals, and
newspapers. As poet laureate, she wrote the official bicentennial poem
of Tennessee, the official poem for the Tennessee state quarter, the governor's
inaugural poem, and a poem celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Air
Force. Her media appearances include programs on PBS, USA, TNN, TNT, and
the BBC, as well as a variety of local radio and TV programs.
Appointment: 1995, currently serving second term.

The poet laureate of Tennesee is elected by the state Legislature and
then approved by the governor. I am on my second five-year term. When
Tennessee chooses a poet laureate, the elected officials look for a poet
of the people. They want someoene to be able to go to the small crossroads
as well as the big cities. Since there are no official duties for the
position of poet laureate in my state, I have taken it upon myself to
travel throughout Tennessee and America promoting poetry. One of my main
themes centers on “Choice of Voice,” which emphasizes that poetry
is in the ear of the beholder. The position of poet laureate in Tennessee
is not a paid one, but I consider it a treasure to hold.
